Becoming Utopia

My main motivation to write about the ontology of the future and utopian theories was that I am fascinated by the translational relationship between cultural theories, design, and architecture. As occasional daydreamer and passionate inventor of utopias myself, with this thesis, I wanted to examine utopian imagination and explore the conceptual space of cognitive mapping.

The following Animation video showcases my thesis in moving pictures that I created following the rhizomatic approach

This study focusses on various cultural theories that
explore different ways of thinking - cultural theories of
sociology and contemporary design which facilitate
a presentation of identity and cultural belonging.

On this ground, I compiled an assemblage of
artistic and philosophical ideas that experiment
with translations of utopian conceptions.
During my research process, I understood
that identifying the realm of all utopias is beyond
the scope of one thesis. Therefore I have
decided to focus on the most elusive concept:
floating utopias.

To understand the concepts of ontology of the future and utopian theories this study looks into a variety of questions such as: To what extent are philosophical concepts useful in developing ontological frameworks for understanding utopian theories? How will we ever be able to achieve utopia if utopian thinkers have a different aesthetic perception? What is essentially the narrative and value of utopia?

To analyse these questions, the thesis’ ideas are not limited to our actual, physical environment in which they are conceived and developed but rather generate a conversation about utopian ideas that push contemporary pre-conceptions and boundaries. In order to be able to develop such discourse, I focussed on utilising a rhizomatic approach, by rejecting hierarchy, and looking against the order of things. My aim was to move away from binary definitions and arborescent or linear constructs and focus on the tapestry of multiplicity.
